Zimmer Durom Cup
US, Canada and Puerto Rico
Marketed in the United States since 2006, the Zimmer Durom Cup is an advanced artificial hip replacement system for patients with a problematic hip. However, this medical device was recalled in 2008 after reports that the cup was defective and failed to bond in a number of patients. If you have been injured by the Zimmer Durom Cup, please contact the defective product lawyers at Balkin & Eisbrouch, LLC.
Zimmer Durom Cup Use
Since it hit the marketplace, approximately 12,500 patients have had this device implanted. The Zimmer Durom Cup is primarily used in the United States during Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) surgeries. In countries abroad, this device has been used for hip resurfacing procedures.
The Zimmer Durom Cup is made from a single piece of material and is designed to reduce vulnerability to traditional hip replacement problems, such as:
- Wear to the bearings
- A limited range of motion
The Problem with the Device
Two years after this defective device was introduced into the marketplace, doctors were forced to perform corrective surgeries because the cup had become loose. The manufacturing company, Zimmer Holdings, Inc., blamed the surgeons for the problem.
Then in July of 2008, the manufacturing company suspended all future sales of Zimmer Durom Cup hip replacement system, revised their instructions for surgeons, and rewrote their warning labels.
The thousands of patients who had the medical device surgically implanted in these two years are at risk for developing:
- Chronic pain
- Permanent injury
- Death if the cup becomes loose
Doctors expect that the patients who currently have a Zimmer Durom Cup in place will be required to undergo more expensive and painful surgery to replace the cup. Surgeons predict the likelihood of this device becoming loose will increase with time.
Hip Surgery Alternatives
If you are considering hip replacement surgery and are worried about the placement of an artificial hip, there are other options. Some of these include:
- Physical therapy
- Walking aids
- Hip resurfacing
- Anti-inflammatory drugs
- Cortisone injections
- Joint supplements
- Hip fusion
- Resection anthroplasty (the bone around the hip joint is removed and allowed to fill with scar tissue)
- Hip osteotomy (when the bones of your hip joint are realigned)
Hip surgery often requires a lengthy recovery period and potential risks such as:
- Blood clots
- Changing in leg length
- Joint stiffening as soft tissues around your joint harden
- Loosening of the new joint, resulting in pain
- Dislocation of the ball of your new joint
