Mesothelioma
US, Canada and Puerto Rico
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure that is difficult to diagnose and may not surface until decades after initial exposure. If you or someone you love has recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related illness, please contact the Workers’ Compensation attorneys Balkin & Eisbrouch, LLC.
About Mesothelioma
Asbestos is the name that is used for a group of six different fibrous minerals that occur naturally in certain soil and rocks. When you inhale asbestos fibers, they irritate and may scar your mesothelium, the protective lining of your lungs, chest cavity, lungs, and other internal organs. With time, this can lead to the development of malignant cells.
Mesothelioma is hard to diagnose, due to the length of time this dangerous cancer is dormant. This means that if you were exposed to asbestos fibers in your 20s, the symptoms may not be revealed until you are middle aged or older. This also means that sadly, mesothelioma is not diagnosed until the cancer is in advanced stages and the prognosis is grim.
Asbestos Exposure
If you worked with or around asbestos fibers, you may not have been told that these potentially damaging fibers could cling to your clothing, hair and skin. This means that not only was your health being put in jeopardy, but also the health of your family. You may have worked in a mine, mill or factory that involved asbestos fibers, as more than 3,000 consumer products contained the material.
However, merely being in the presence of an asbestos-containing material does not mean that you were exposed to asbestos fibers. If the asbestos is intact, there is no health risk. When the material is broken down, the airborne fibers can be swallowed or inhaled. Workers who removed or handled asbestos-containing materials, have likely been exposed to asbestos dust and not known it.
Mesothelioma Symptoms
You may not experience symptoms until 15, even 50 years after initial asbestos exposure. Because mesothelioma symptoms often resemble the symptoms of a less-serious illness, many patients do not realize the severity of their condition.
Some symptoms of mesothelioma include:
- Persistent dry or raspy cough
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Unexplained weight loss
- The appearance of lumps under the skin on your chest
- Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
- Persistent pain in the chest or rib area, or painful breathing
- Night sweats or fever
- Shortness of breath (dyspnea) that occurs even when at rest
- Fatigue
The prognosis for mesothelioma is grim. If you live in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico and are exhibiting side effects of this asbestos-caused cancer, please contact the personal injury attorneys at Balkin & Eisbrouch, LLC. We can help you recover the damages you deserve and ease the financial hardship of dealing with this illness.
