Denture Cream Zinc Poisoning
US, Canada and Puerto Rico
In the United States, about 35 million people use denture creams to secure their dentures, but of these millions, many are unaware of the potentially dangerous effects that the zinc in these denture creams can have if digested. Ingestion of denture cream can lead to a zinc-induced copper deficiency that can result in neurological problems. If you have suffered zinc poisoning from denture cream, please contact the defective product lawyers at Balkin & Eisbrouch, LLC today.
Zinc in Small Dosages
Typically, we ingest anywhere from 8-11 milligrams of zinc each day, most often through red meat, nuts and grains. However, too much zinc can cause serious health problems. Some consumers who used denture cream were exposed to a daily dose of 330 milligrams of zinc, much more than the recommended daily dose of 40 milligrams.
Too Much Zinc
When denture cream is used, zinc is absorbed by your gums. High levels of zinc in your system can inhibit your absorption of copper, which can lead to anemia and copper deficiency. Too much zinc can also reduce the function of your body’s immune system. One of the most serious effects of zinc poisoning is “neuropathies,” damage to your nerves that disrupts your body’s ability to communicate with its:
- Muscles
- Skin
- Joints
- Internal organs
Common Symptoms of Zinc Poisoning
Some symptoms of zinc poisoning include:
- Tingling in your hands and feet
- Unexplained weakness
- Lack of coordination
- Numbness
- Poor balance
- Unexplained pain
- Weakness in your hands, arms or legs
- Burning sensations
- Feeling of wearing gloves or socks when your skin is bare
Though reducing zinc intake to normal levels can help, often times the damage is irreversible, and there is no cure. Victims injured by denture cream may require extensive medical attention, which can be very costly.
Failure to Warn Consumers
Because some denture cream manufacturers failed to warn consumers that their products are potentially toxic and can cause serious neurological damage, they should be held liable for any injuries. Some of these companies include:
- Poligrip
- Fixodent
- Super Poligrip
If you have become injured because of zinc poisoning due to a denture cream, you may be eligible to receive compensation for:
- Hospital bills and other medical bills
- Loss of income and the inability to earn future income
- Pain and suffering
Medical tests can be performed to determine if zinc poisoning is to blame for your neurological symptoms. If you suspect you have suffered zinc poisoning, talk to a doctor immediately and then contact the personal injury law firm of Balkin & Eisbrouch, LLC. We serve clients nationwide and in Puerto Rico and Canada.
