Chantix

US, Canada and Puerto Rico

An anti-smoking drug that was created to lower nicotine cravings and withdrawals, Chantix works by blocking your brain receptors that are responsible for the pleasurable feelings associated with smoking. Two years after Chantix was approved for public distribution, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), issued a health advisory warning users of depression and suicidal tendencies associated with the drug. If you or someone you love has taken Chantix and is suffering from depression or neurological side effects, please contact the law office of dangerous drug lawyers Balkin & Eisbrouch, LLC.

About Chantix

Chantix, the trade name for varenicline, is prescribed to those who want to quit smoking. Proven to decrease nicotine addiction, lower cravings and ease nicotine withdrawal symptoms, Chantix was approved by the FDA in 2006.

The side effects associated with Chantix and discovered during clinical testing include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Gas and constipation
  • Changes in behavior
  • Agitation
  • Feelings of depression

FDA Warning

In 2008, the FDA issued a public health warning to those taking the anti-smoking drug. The administration cautioned users that Chantix had been linked to more severe neuropsychiatric symptoms such as serious depression and actualized suicidal behavior. The FDA also announced that Chantix may increase the risk of past psychiatric illnesses of resurfacing, and may worsen any existing mental illnesses.

Other Health Issues Associated with Chantix

Since its introduction to the marketplace, Chantix has also been linked to:

  • Neurological effects that can impair balance, coordination and/or decision-making abilities.
  • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), swelling of your skin's mucous membranes that results in painful blisters.
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis syndrome (TENS), a more severe form of SJS that causes the outer layer your skin to disconnect from its underlying layers. This causes the outer layer to die and ultimately fall off.

Compensation for Those Injured by Chantix

If you have been injured or lost a loved one due to the negative effects of Chantix, you have the right to be compensated. Depending on the extent of your injuries, you may be able to collect compensation to cover:

  • Funeral bills and burial costs
  • Hospital bills (past, present and future)
  • Permanent disabilities
  • Lost wages and loss of future earning capacity
  • Necessary ongoing treatments
  • Pain and suffering

More than 3,000 patients have reportedly developed at least one of the detrimental side effects associated with Chantix. As of 2008, there have been at least 55 people who have committed suicide after taking the anti-smoking drug. Chantix lawsuits are crucial to helping those injured from the prescription drug collect the compensation they deserve.
