What is Adderall?
Adderall is the generic name for amphetamine-dextroamphetamine, which comes in pill form and is available between five and 30 milligrams. Adderall XR, an extended-release form of the drug, is also available in the same dosages. Besides ADHD, Adderall is also used to treat narcolepsy.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is a condition where you have trouble paying attention and focusing on tasks. While there is no clear reason as to what causes ADHD, some experts believe that the disorder is genetic. It also tends to begin in early childhood between the ages of 6 and 12 and may continue into adulthood. If left untreated, ADHD can cause problems at home, in school, at work and in relationships.
The major symptoms of this disorder include:
- Difficulty sitting still for even a short time
- Difficulty focusing attention
- Acting without thinking
There is no cure for ADHD, but treatment with therapeutic drugs can help control symptoms.
Dangers of Adderall
The risks of Adderall first surfaced in Canada when health officials pulled the medication from the market in response to 20 reports of sudden death, which were believed to be caused by the medication. Adderall returned to pharmacies when scientists could not prove that the drug posed a greater risk to consumers than similar nervous stimulants.
However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health officials recognize several serious dangers of the drug, such as:
- High blood pressure
- Increased risk of heart attacks
- Sudden death
- Severe withdrawal symptoms
- Worsening mental health
- Stunted growth
- Significant weight loss
Adderall Abuse
Adderall has high risk for abuse and addiction, especially among college students. Because of its high abuse potential, the FDA has issued a “black box warning,” the strongest it can issue, for the medication.
